Kanpur woman’s emotional note to civil servant seeking ownership of land

By Suraj Singh: In a heartwarming incident at the District Magistrate’s office in Uttar Pradesh’s Kanpur Dehat, a 77-year-old elderly woman reached out to the District Magistrate (DM), seeking justice with a letter in hand.

The woman, identified as Kusum Singh, has been visiting the Bhognipur Tehsil and the office of the revenue officer for the past year, but the officer concerned kept postponing her work.

Frustrated by the delays, Singh, determined to have her voice heard, wrote a letter and visited the DM’s office approximately 17 kilometers from her home in Maulasar village.

‘I HAVE BEEN STRUGGLING FOR A YEAR ‘

The letter in Hindi, loosely translated to English, read: “Currently, I am 77 years old, and my son-in-law and daughter-in-law do not want to provide me with food. I came to know that some land belonging to my husband is located around the village. Last year, I went to Bhognipur Tehsil and found out who the patwari (revenue officer) of that area is and identified him as Hariram. I informed him and asked him to transfer the land under my name. I have been struggling for a year now with this.”

Kusum Singh’s husband, Chhavinath Singh, was working in Kolkata when he died due to cancer in 1981. After her husband’s death, Kusum Singh went back to her village, where she now lives alone. She discovered that her husband had additional land in the neighboring village, which she wanted to be transferred to her name.

Hence, for the past year, she has been persistently visiting the Bhognipur Tehsil and the revenue officer’s office. However, the officer kept giving her new dates, resulting in frustration and disappointment.

HEARTWARMING REACTION

After reading Singh’s letter and hearing her story, District Magistrate Neha Jain was unable to contain her emotions and immediately hugged her.
