Ex-Assam minister, wife arrested for torturing 12-year-old domestic help

By Saraswat Kashyap: Former Assam Minister Haji Abdur Rauf Chaudhury (85) and his wife Farhana Begum (28) have been arrested for allegedly torturing their 12-year-old domestic help at their home in the state’s Hojai district. The arrests came after Farhana Begum was seen hitting the girl in a video that went viral on social media.

“The incident came to light when a video of the child being abused went viral on social media on Thursday. The video was shared by a resident of Hojai in which a woman can be seen beating the girl”, the police said.

As soon as the video went viral, child helpline services immediately intervened and rescued her on Thursday. The police took note of the situation and a case was registered against the couple on Friday.

After a preliminary probe, the couple was arrested and charged under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

According to the police, Farhana said she had adopted the girl in 2022 to give her a better life. However, the couple failed to produce any adoption documents, the police added.

Speaking to the media, Farhana said, “The child was not focusing on her studies and was not attending classes. One day, her school complained to me about her inattentiveness in class. So, I beat her and filmed the video intentionally.” She further claimed that her husband had no idea about the video.
